Initially, the notorious leg of ham was a dish served only to royals, emperors, and their affluent guests. Prosciutto is an Italian ham that is dry-cured for days, then finely sliced and served uncooked. The way prosciutto is prepared in Italy varies from region to region. Each preparation offers a unique burst of flavour and pairs well with different ingredients. Prosciutto di Parma is a sweater ham produced in Parma with a simple salt seasoning. Prosciutto San Daniele, on the other hand, has a velvety texture, and its thin slices are melt in your mouth delicious when paired with roasted asparagus or plain cantaloupe and a crisp pinot grigio.

For a meatier cured alternative, Bresaola is a beautiful Italian option that is produced from cattle. It’s air-cured like prosciutto but has a unique texture and taste.

 

  1. Country ham

Country ham is a specialty in the southern parts of the US. While each southern state has its own recipe for their pork ham, their meat usually ends up dry-cured. Country ham also has a distinct salty and smoky aroma that’s often accompanied by flavours of hickory, honey or maple syrup.

 

  1. Turkey ham

Turkey ham is made from, well you guessed it, turkey meat. To prepare this ham, turkey thigh is wet-cured and smoked to produce a white meat alternative that is flavourful but less chewy.
